Got to do the head gasket !!!!!!!(eek)
« on: March 22, 2012, 08:33:55 PM »

Hi Guys,
Well it finally happened. I was just turning into a turning in town (so not going very fast) and there was a clunk and the car stopped. From what I can see, the cam belt is gone. I need to take the head off to see what damage has been done.  Can anyone tell me the torque setting for the head bolts should I want to re-place the head. If anyone has a tutorial for the cam belt replacement that would be appeciated. I did look on the forum but couldn't find one.

Thanks,

Thanks Tony,
I think its probably the end for my Lucida. I have removed the cam cover and the camshaft is broken in two place. I could have just about managed the cost of a cam belt and head gasket but a cam or most likely a new head and head gasket and cambelt is behond my finances. Its a shame as the engine never gave out so much as a whisp of smoke and the bus has a new radiator, new starter motor, new middle box for the exhaust, 4 new tyres about 7 months ago and a brand new towbar. Still, i am going to take the head off and see how much damage its done but I suspect it will be too much for my pocket.

Thanks again,

Hi Tony,
I don't know if something seized mate or if the camshaft took the belt out or the other way round but the belt was a genuine toyota belt. Its my fault anyway as the belt had been on there for over 18 months and I have been meaning to get round to it but you know how it goes when families intervene and I never did it. Cant blame the head, the belt or Toyota just me. We will see anyway. If its too bad then its back to a Volvo estate for me as I dont think I could afford to buy a new Lucida again.

Thanks anyway mate,

Hi Tony,
Thats very nice of you mate. I got most of the head stuff stripped off today. Just the exaust manifold to do and the I will know. I can see that by the time I eventually get to meet you all that I shall need to own a pub just to pay back what I owe you. I will post progress tomorrow night.

Thats again,

Sorry guys, I didn't get the head off today. Seemed that for every 4 bolts I undid, 1 wouldn't come out. I'm going to try again tomorrow but I am trying to take my time and brake the minimum amount of stuff on the car. What a pain this job is.

Sods law things like this happen in the colder months take your time plenty of wd40. If you can get heat to it helps but not at the same time as the wd40  Grin

Well guys,
I finally got the head off and guess what? Your wrong, there was no damage at all. The pistons had stopped in a straight line about halfway down the bores. Apart from a little smear of soot on the pistons and valves everything is good. Looks like the dancing Leprecaun that my Dad sent me for luck, worked. I am going to buy a new camshaft but I could do with three of the camshaft baring caps if anyone has any. There were three of them broken as the camshaft had broken in three places and not two. I haven't decided if I am going to refurbish whats there or just buy a new and populated head for around £270 from e-bay. What do you think? More progress reports when there are some.

Hi Tony,
As far as I can tell the rest of the engine is free with no rough patches on anything. When I got the bus, I used a cleaner in with the oil. I have a theory that maybe some oil I was given wasn't turbo deisel oil which could be a probable cause. The belt looks almost new except for the break obviously. The caps I am looking for are the ones that bolt down the camshaft, three of which are broken in half. I am beginning to think that maybe the camshaft broke and took out the belt rather than the other way round. That would seem to suggest that there was a lack of oil to the camshaft and it wasn't exactly soaking when I took it off. However it wasn't dry either. I can only go ahead and try it out and sort it as I go. If you have the camshaft clamps let me know and we can sort out a price and postage.
