reverse polarity on the electrics isnt something I would try.
simply disconnecting the battery for 5-10 mins will clear the code.
(I was always taught to leave the sidelights switched to on when doing batterys as if there is a spike, the sidelights will take the surge, not the ecu and airbags etc!)
Looks like you do need a pre OBII connector to read the older previa/estima/lucida's... How much is the one on ebay you seen? may be worth a punt?
Aye it's OBII but to read diagnostics a cheaper alternative is a paperclip usually does the job, short out terminals E1 and TE1 and counting the flashes of the engine management light. To clear the codes taking the battery off for a few minutes does the job nicely
