Hi

Ive just joined the forum and Im looking for help already....

Ive had my bus a 96 GS manual 123'000 miles for about a month
I t has a few niggles which i've been planning to get fixed as follows
Squeal from under the bonnet which I was previously advised may be a ---loose belt?
Slight blow from the exhaust
occasional slight Thunk from rear when engaging gear

However last night on a short shopping trip the heater would only blow cold even the engine was warm

And today on the way to work the engine started cutting out.

It happens if you take your foot off the gas..the revs just drop to zero.
It will restart  on the key or by 'bumping it' and run till you take your foot off again.

Could this be the alternator? related to the belt issue? cor does the cold heater suggest bigger problems?



I would appreciate any advice or bad news stories from similar experiences

first question do you know when the service was last done cutting out could be due to blocked air filter or clogged fuel filter. if you dont know its time to service.

the heating could be as simple as the cable comming off under the bonnet, common problem if it is just find some thing you can wedge it in place with. How is your coolent has it got a nice colour to it do you know if its standard or toyota red. if you dont know safest way would be too flush it and put a coolant of your choose in.

theres two places you tighten the belt first is the alternator on the right under the bonnet undo the wing nut then do a few turns on the nut. helps if you remove the center air scoop. the second is just bu the air con pump on the left under the bonnet this is two bolts but same tecneac.

gear box is just behind the front seats. Not to sure with the manual gear box but would suggest its low on fluid. If not you might be looking at replacing something clutch or box.

Like he said, most buses regardless of UK or Jap origins are a bit neglected a good service wouldn't hurt. Never known a petrol one to stall with a blocked filter but then again petrol stations are running stocks closer to the bone than ever before so there's a good chance that the crap on the bottom of the station's fuel tank has been dumped into the car with a regular fill up and then drawn into the filter.

Could also be a blocked/corroded/collapsed breather pipe on the filler although that's a bit more of a fiddly job start with the most likely (and easiest) solutions first

i should read much closer next time and look at the photo. this is a case for propnut he'll have the answer on the tip of his tongue.

I went and got some distilled to top up

The heater came back full blast with about half a litre
I poured a bit more in but the level on the expansion tank didnt seem to rise
I noticed a lot of liquid in the tray under the front bonnet compartment.

After filling it up a bit more I started it up and shone a light under the bonnet and I spotted a drip
coming from under the expansion tank itself.

Hopefully this means there is no emgine damage

Still does the cut out thing though

theres a little rubber pipe to the back and top of the expansion bottle i tend to point that up when i top up the water stop it excaping like you had., hows the rubber on the lid of the bottle this tends to perish and stops the seal
